South Coast Builders call for improvement in building plans

Members of the MBA's south coast division reciently met at the Ulladulla MBA Office to discuss the incresing concern at the poor quality of building plans. Also in attendance were representatives of the Building Designers Association and the Shoalhaven Council.

Builders at the meeting expressed concern that the absence of fundamental detail on many building plans is resulting in builders becoming de-facto architectsand engineers. Consequently, this is exposing builders to additional risk due to taking on the role of designer and engineer.

The MBA is seeking to bring designers, architects and engineers into the licencing systemto bring about a level of accountability. in addition, the meeting agreed to further enhance a design checklist to establish a list of fundamental items which should be included on plans. It is then intended to seek to have the checklist endorsed under regulation, consequently setting a minimum standard for plans across NSW.
