Shadow casting property for Lights

Postby David Howe » 18 May 2009, 11:21

Each light object should have a "Cast Shadows" property that can be set to "On" or "Off"

During rendering, one of the biggest processing tasks is the generation of shadow maps. When trying to render an internal view of a typical office floor this means generating 100s of shadow maps, one for each light in the RCP, when in reality, due to the evenness of illumination, none of these lights needs to be shadow casting. Being able to switch off shadow casting would significantly reduce render times.

Considering BIM methodology means that most people will be placing lighting objects in their models (not just drawing 2D linework), it stands to reason that most users would want to hit the Render button without having to think about faking the lighting with a bunch of "Area" light sources located strategically around the model.
